University of Zagreb
Faculty of Philosophy
The Faculty of Philosophy, along with the Faculties of Theology and Law, is directly descended from one of the first institutions of higher education in Croatia. Its history began with Emperor Leopold I's Charter of 1669 and continued with the Neoacademia Zagrebiensis. In 1776 the institution, now called the Regia Scientiarum Academia, had three courses of study: philosophy, theology, and law. However, it was not until the revival of Croatian education under the rule of Ban Ivan Mazuranic that a full-scale university was established on 19 October 1874, consisting of the three faculties mentioned above. In the first academic year (1874/75), there were six chairs (Philosophy, General History, Croatian History, Slavic Philology, Classical Philology - Latin and Greek), six professors, and 26 students. The individual chairs gradually grew into departments, more complex units each having several sections. The Faculty of Philosophy now counts 20 departments. Its staff includes 85 professors, 56 associate professors, 60 assistant professors, 9 lecturers, 59 lectors, 67 teaching assistants, 25 librarians, and 100 administrative and technical personnel. Gvozden Flego is professor of Social Philosophy at the University of Zagreb. He is external expert member of the Croatian Parliament (Committee for Education, Science, and Culture) and President of the Croatian Association of Social Sciences and Humanities. As guest to Philosophy Departments or National Philosophical Societies, professor Flego has lectured and presented papers in universities in Austria, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Portugal, Switzerland and the USA. He is co-director of the international post-graduate courses in social philosophy at the Inter-University Centre for Postgraduate Studies (Dubrovnik).
